An Awkward Moment

You know that moment when the triple chocolate layer cake makes its grand entrance? The host or hostess begins cutting wedges the size of bricks and smiles at you, inviting you to partake of this rapturous culinary delight. You are on a low carb diet that keeps you feeling fit and looking fabulous. What do you do?

Here is a response almost guaranteed to get you excommunicated from nearly any group. (Unless it’s a chapter of the ‘No Carb Nutritional Snobs’).

“Oh, no thanks! All that sugar and chocolate isn’t good for anybody. I don’t even think it tastes very good, now that I am on a low carb diet. Did you know that in a book about the Atkins Diet, it is said that sugar is the most commonly consumed cancer-causing substance in the western world? And chocolate has toxic contaminants in it - insect parts and heavy metals. Besides, you know what they say - ‘a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.’”

Your host or hostess only wants to share the pleasure of their delectable chocolate creation. (And, by the way, I am not picking on chocolate - just using it as an example. I actually eat it myself occasionally because I know it has some excellent health benefits. It is the large amounts of sugar that most chocolates contain that is devastating to health. I make my own to bypass that pitfall. See below).

Or, you could try the ‘I’m allergic to chocolate’ ploy. But your hostess has provided another sugary dessert for those who might not like chocolate. So now what do you do? How many things can you be allergic to?

Honesty Accompanied by Graciousness

Here are some ideas on how to be a gracious guest that your host or hostess will want to invite back again and again, and keep your diet healthy at the same time.

1 - A low-profile approach: When they pass the potatoes and you are on a low carb diet, you can either take just a little, or pass the dish on to the next person. If someone happens to notice and says something like, ‘Don’t you want more than that?’ you can reply, ‘No thanks, I want to leave more room for that great chicken dish.’

So as you choose not to partake of the potatoes, you are complimenting the chef by your desire for his/her other creation. Not only that, but you are being honest as well as gracious. You really do want more of the chicken!

2 - Food selection: Once you have filled your plate, you can eat as much or as little of whatever is on it that you want. Assuming that most of what you put on your plate is food you want to eat and enjoy, you will fit right in, happily chatting and munching just like everyone else.

3 - Compliment the chef - let them know how much you are enjoying the Chicken Marsala or String Beans Almondine. The chef wants to feel appreciated. So what if you didn’t eat a few ounces of potatoes.

What About That Chocolate Cake?

OK, you got this far, and out comes the triple-layer chocolate cake. Now what?

You thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and you made sure to let your host/ hostess know that. You can do one of two things when the huge wedge of chocolate cake comes your way:

1 - Ask for a smaller piece. ‘That looks so good, but I only have room for a small slice, thanks.’ You can then taste and enjoy some without finishing it. One of the other guests may very well ask if you want the rest, and happily grab your plate to finish it.

2 - Simply say, ‘No thanks, I enjoyed everything else so much I don’t have room for another bite.’ You already have expressed your appreciation and enjoyment during the main part of the meal, so the chef knows you loved his/her food.

Last, and Most Important

Never feel guilty about choosing the best foods for you in any social situation! If anyone makes an issue over why you are not eating something, it’s their problem! If you feel you have to justify what you are doing, or get angry or annoyed, that defensiveness shows you that you are insecure.

It is common for someone who has recently switched to a better diet or lifestyle to become somewhat evangelical and want to convert everyone else to their way. Once you get comfortable and confident with your new dietary preferences, you won’t have to do that.

Of course, it is natural to want to share your enthusiasm about something that made you feel so much better. But it is best to share it only with those who express an interest with questions like, ‘You look really great! How did you lose weight?’ This gives you an opening to tell them what you are doing. Keep it simple and short. If they want more details, they will ask you.

There are many studies out today indicating that “stress” and the way you take care of your body, and the products you may be using are a contributing factor to your pimples and blackheads. If you can look back when you had good skin and see what you may have been doing differently, you could hopefully make some lifestyle changes for the better. With these changes, you could possibly see positive results, and avoid having to take acne medications prescribed by your dermatologist.

There are many elements that can be contributing to your skin blemishes, and the ingredients in the select treatment product you’re using can also be the cause of your skin irritation, which is causing your reoccurring pimple breakouts. So let’s look at some topics that have come up in some studies, and see if we can clarify some of the elements that may be affecting your current lifestyle.

Facial Medications, Caffeine, Stress, And The Sun! What Do They Have In Common, And How Does It Affect Your Blemish Situation?

I’m not a doctor, and I don’t have any professional skin care background, but what I do have is a common sense approach to issues. When I read about certain acne products, and also the food and drink we consume on a daily basis, plus the type of life we live makes sense to me when we mix it all together and try and link it to our skin condition.

First we should talk about coffee, pop and alcohol, and see what the connection is to skin problems. In my opinion, the way I interpret coffee, pop and alcohol is that they contribute several elements to your body that assist in major changes to your skin.

Caffeine and sugar in coffee and pop, plus alcohols are partial diuretics that assist in drawing more water out of your body than bringing water back in, plus they’re a stimulant and can prevent you from getting the recommended amount of sleep that your body needs, which ranges from at least 7 to 8 hours per night. What this all means is that by consuming these products daily, they could be changing the entire dynamics of your body, and affecting you dramatically without you even realizing the changes.

What happens is this: your body may become over stimulated with all these items going through your system, and either consumed separately or in combination, your skin may seriously become affected by these products. Depending on your body’s tolerance level, your reactions could be reflected by the daily consumption.

Let’s look at the connection of the cleansers, creams, and acne cosmetics you’re currently using, and see why some may not work to prevent your acne breakouts or increased blackheads. When taking a common sense approach to the ingredients, avoid any product that will shrink your pores! Now this information may contradict products that say they reduce pore size, and make them look less visible.

What that means I don’t know. But when you think about it for a moment, if you have a product that shrinks your pores, that’s going to increase the chance that you will have more oil trapped in your skin. The more of the skin’s oil that is potentially blocking your pores, the higher chance you’re going to form blackheads and whiteheads, plus the trapped oil will be tasty food for bacteria that feeds off the oil and dead skin, eventually turning it into a nasty blemish. Think about that, and if it makes sense to you, then avoid products that have any astringent agents in them.

The sun is one that I have been very confused about for a long time, but again when it was explained to me, it made total sense, and now I really understand the benefits and the damages it can cause. The sun actually can help you in your battle on acne; however, the time you spend in the sun can make the big difference. I found out that the sun actually aids in killing bacteria on your skin, but you should limit your time to approximately 15 minutes per day, because when you spend long periods of time in the sun, it will eventually dry and reduce the pores in your skin. Now like above, what happens when the pores shrink? Absolutely, trapped oil and the formation of zits!

Stress, in my opinion, is the biggest contributor to your body’s lifestyle changes, and believe it or not, it seems to tie in with everything above, because stress is caused by many elements from the types of food you consume, to the everyday lifestyle you lead with your work and play.

Again, I’m not a doctor, but even with my own body I notice that if I don’t get enough sleep, or I worry about a project that has to be completed, and the everyday choices I make in cleaning my skin all is in some way a contributor to stress, and the changes in my body. So when you sit back and see if you can adjust anything in the way you live your life for the better, you may be on the right track to not only a healthier lifestyle, but also clearer, blemish free skin!

A lot of people tend to look at the most recent celebrity hairstyles and fashions in magazines, newspapers and online, this gives you a good idea on what trends are in and gives you the chance to get a few ideas in return.

One thing to bear in mind is that you should make sure you have a well known and highly regarded salon to go to, as the personnel there will all be trained to a quality and professional level and you will get a quality service. So ask around or take a walk down the high street and see for yourself what salons are the busiest.

At the end of all this you will sport a smart hairstyle that your friends and relations will all be envious of!

Overview of Lithium SSRI

Over the last few years the Lithium SSRI combination has been accepted by the medical community for treatment of Bipolar Type II Depression, also called BD II and Type II Depression, but with reservations due to problems with SSRI’s. BD II is one of the less severe forms of Bipolar Disorder. Symptoms are more likely to be anxiety or irritability than actual mania. BD II is, however, very capable of interfering with a person’s ability to live a normal life.

Lithium is a mood stabilizing drug often used to treat mania and less frequently to treat depression. SSRIs are a class of anti-depressants that are, among other things, also used to treat depression and anxiety.

The most current research suggests that SSRIs, on their own, do little to help with MD II, and one study even compares them to sugar pills. Use of SSRIs by themselves, in this context, can even be dangerous. It can lead to increased manic episodes and in extreme cases suicide, especially when used over long periods. SSRIs can also cause the manic/depression cycle to accelerate.

The preferred treatment for MDII is Lithium or a similar mood stabilizing drug. It takes time for the medicine to work. A couple weeks is common. Then the dosing must be adjusted, possibly several times. With some trial and error it will usually work.

When it does not, in some cases, the addition of an SSRI will help. The SSRI supports what the Lithium is already doing by attacking the same problem from a slightly different direction.

Lithium does not negate the risks that come with the use of SSRIs alone. It does allow the SSRIs to be used in lower dosage, which minimizes the danger. Unfortunately, periodic treatment with SSRIs does not work. Giving SSRIs to a patient currently in a depressed state will not alleviate their immediate problem.

The answer generally recognized is to give the SSRI only when it is clear Lithium alone will not end a person’s cycle of moods. When taken its use must be regular, but it is temporary. Once the patient’s moods are stabilized the SSRI is discontinued.

Lithium and SSR’s are both strong and dangerous drugs that should only be taken under supervision of a doctor. In addition to the problems already mentioned, each has powerful potential side effects of its own.

Some of the side effects of either Lithium or SSRIs may be more annoying than problematic. Others are serious and require immediate medical attention. Be sure to get, and study, a full list of side effects from your doctor.

Summary of Lithium SSRI

The combined use of Lithium and SSRIs for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder Type II Depression is neither an exact science nor a completed study. Research is ongoing. The consensus seems to be that there is a place for it, but it does involve significant risk. The answer to the risk seems twofold. First, limit use of SSRIs to clear necessity and discontinue when appropriate. Second, require careful management of the drug combination when it is used. The Lithium SSRI combination can be a wise one when properly monitored.

Herbalife is a company that has been selling health products and supplements since 1980, and its products are distributed via multilevel marketing. The company offers a variety of weight loss products, including ShapeWorks (protein-based weight loss shakes and pills), Snack Defense (appetite control), Total Control (metabolism booster), and Cell-U-Loss (cellulite reducer).

Herbalife has experienced some major health-realated complaints: The original formula was manufactured with the herbs Ma Huang and Sida cordifolia, which contain ephedrine. Some people taking the supplements experienced adverse reactions and Herbalife’s insurance premiums were rising, so the company stopped putting ephedrine in its products. In 2004, the FDA banned any supplements that contained ephedra.

Despite the formula change, there have been more recent complaints related to Herbalife: In 2007, doctors in Israel did scientific studies on Herbalife, which resulted in a link between Herbalife consumption and hepatitis. The Spanish Ministry of Health put out an alert as a result of this, cautioning citizens to be careful if taking Herbalife supplements.

A laboratory test by The Fraud Discovery Institute found higher lead levels in Herbalife products than is legal in the company’s home state of California, but other commissioned lab tests did not find the same results. Additionally, in May of 2008 a woman who developed lead-related liver problems filed a suit against Herbalife, claiming their products caused her health problems.

In 1996 the Food and Drug Administration evaluated Herbalife and stated that the products were safe at that time, but it’s important to note that none of the Herbalife products are actually approved by the FDA, which monitors the safety and effectiveness of products. Some sites that sell Herbalife, such as AmazingDiet.com, say “Since these products are nutritional food supplements they are safe.” That is not true; the nutritional food supplement industry is mostly unregulated, and there is no guarantee they are safe unless they are FDA approved - which Herbalife’s website explicitly says the products are not. Alli is the only over-the-counter weight loss product that has been approved by the FDA, meaning it is the only one that is guaranteed safe.

The Herbalife company itself has had some problems, with a 2004 settlement to resolve a class action law suit. Almost 9,000 former Herbalife distributors claimed the company is running a pyramid scheme. Oddly, Herbalife is also the company that has put out the oft-aired Crazy Fox commercials, with a vague invitation to go to a website for a home-based business opportunity.

So is Herbalife safe? The company says yes, that all their products exceed Good Manufacturing Practices and are made with the highest ingredients. Meanwhile, some studies show that it may cause dangerous health problems. Because it is not FDA-approved, it’s not quite clear. Use your best judgment here, and perhaps consider a weight loss program that does not involve unapproved supplements.

Bath time can be the perfect time to address problems and issues the skin of your body is experiencing. 1. Goosebumps

Goosebumps usually occur on the thighs, the buttocks and/or the upper arms. You can stimulate the circulation by scrubbing regularly with a bath mitt or loofah in the bath. It is also beneficial to scrub with sea salt once in a while, or with sugar, or with a bag filled with oatmeal or bran. The `follow-up` should be a massage thoroughly given with hand cream or body lotion.

2. Bulge-reduction

One treatment that combines friction with a weight-reducing treatment is to use a friction glove. Even if weight loss is not your concern, the glove is an excellent way of eliminating goosebumps and achieving a healthy pink glow.

Alternately, you can use a soft-bristled (natural bristles!) brush to dry brush your skin. I use a cheap one from WalMart which is made by Goody, although there are fancy/expensive ones available. Dry brush your skin, starting at the extremities (feet and hands) and using long strokes always towards your heart. Do this before a bath or shower - it is great for exfoliation, detoxification, circulation and cellulite.

3. Discolored and horny knees and elbows

Regular attention is required to these areas to eradicate the problem, but a `blitz` treatment can be commenced right now.

a. First the elbows and knees should be massaged with cleansing cream and then tissued off. These should then be worked with a pumice stone and water whilst you are in the bath and then rubbed with sea salt or an oatmeal and bran, or with sugar mixed with a little vegetable oil. You should then rinse well.

b. Following the bath, a cut lemon should be rubbed over the elbows and knees and the juice allowed to dry.

c. The areas should then be massaged well using body lotion or hand cream.

You can do this treatment once a week or once a month, but in between times you should ensure to pumice and massage with hand cream or body lotion.

4. Very Dry Skin

* 4 drops Lavender Essential Oil

* 2 drops Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil

* 1 drop Palmarosa Essential Oil

* 1 drop Geranium Essential Oil

Blend and add 3-5 drops to 1/4 cup baking soda or epsom salts. Add to warm bath with water running and soak 10-20 minutes.

Herbal Waters Bath Oil

This sensuous oil turns any bath into a pampering spa treatment full of moisturizing plant oils and skin-friendly herbal Essential Oils.

* 1 cup Almond oil

* 2 cups Avocado oil

* 2 Green Tea bags

* 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

* 8 drops Chamomile Essential Oil

* 4 drops Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil

* 2 drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Warm Almond and Avocado oils in a small saucepan. Remove from heat, add tea bags and let steep until cool. Remove Herbs and combine tea-infused oil with remaining ingredients in a 12-ounce glass bottle with a lid or a stopper. Close tightly and shake well to mix the oils. Store mixture in a cool, dark place for 24 hours to allow the oils to blend.

To use, add 2 ounces to your bath water and soak 10-20 minutes.

Marigold and Fennel Milk Bath

Fennel acts as a stimulant, while marigold offers healing qualities. Milk is an excellent skin softener and conditioner.

* Muslin material

* 8 T. Milk powder

* 4 Oz. Dried Fennel seeds

* 2 Oz. Dried marigold flowers

* Ribbon

Cut out a 10 inch diameter circle of muslin. In a bowl, mix together the seeds, milk powder, and marigold flowers. Place a large handful of the mixture into the center of the muslin circle. Gather up the edges to form a pouch and tie tightly with ribbon. Toss into hot bath and allow to steep about 10 minutes before entering.

Honey and Oatmeal Milk Bath

* 1 cup powdered milk

* 1 cup finely ground oats

* 1/2 cup honey powder

* 2 tsp fragrant oil of choice

Place all ingredients into a glass or stainless steel bowl, mix well. Add approx 1/2 cup to warm bath, relax and enjoy.

5. Cellulite

Cellulite Blend

These mixtures stimulate circulation.

* Eucalyptus Citriodora 2 ml

* Lemon 2 ml

* Cedarwood 2ml

* Sage 2ml

* Cypress 2 ml

* Niaouli 2ml

* in 100 ml Hazelnut oil

or

* 2 d. Bay oil

* 2 d. Lemon oil

* 4 d. Lavender oil in 20 ml Sesame oil

Directions:

Combine ingredients and add 5-7 drops in a warm (not hot) bath. Soak for 10-15 minutes. Additionally, you can apply this blend to problem areas 2-3 times per day after bath or shower for 30 days.

6. Detoxification and Deodorization

Deodorizing Herbal Bath

All of the Herbs in this recipe contain ingredients that will deodorize your body. It is a wonderful herbal mixture to enjoy after a hot day of working in the garden.

* 1/4 cup fresh or 2 tablespoons dried Thyme

* 1/4 cup fresh or 2 tablespoons dried Lavender buds

* 1/4 cup fresh or 2 tablespoons dried Rosemary

* 1 muslin bath bag

* 1 quart boiling water

Add the fresh or dried Herbs to the bag and close snugly. Add the bag to the water and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes. Remove the infusion from the heat and cool to lukewarm. Add the infusion and bag to your bathwater, using the bag of herbs as a washcloth.

Skin-Softening and Detox Bath

The bath has the added benefit of helping to remove Toxins, and being very calming and relaxing, too.

Ingredients

* 1 cup buttermilk

* 3 tablespoons Epsom salts

* 1/2 tablespoon Olive Oil or Canola oil

* 3 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Combine ingredients and pour into the stream of warm water as your tub fills. Immerse yourself and soak for 15 minutes or so.
