Recently, I was trying to find out why people consider mineral water healthy. I came across an article about the contents and benefits of natural mineral water H20 that was written for or about the waters of Missouri. I thought I would share the information with my readers, but of course, I have to include my own opinion.

They said that electrolytes make mineral water healthy. The term “electrolytes” is really another word for minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium. Muscles and neurons need electrolytes to function properly.

Companies like Gatorade say that you need to replace electrolytes lost during exercise. But, unless you are exercising strenuously for 5 or 6 hours, you will not deplete your body’s stores of electrolytes during that time.

The article said that Missouri’s natural mineral water H20 has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Sodium chloride or “salt” does have slight antiseptic properties and since there is some sodium and chloride in Missouri’s waters, I guess they might consider them “slightly” antibacterial.

It just concerns me that ill people might get the wrong idea about considering mineral water healthy. But, it also concerns me that people might drink too much. Everything in the body is about balance. Too much electrolyte intake could damage the kidneys.

But, drinking natural mineral water H20, because it has an antibacterial affect does not appeal to me, either. I don’t drink chlorinated water, because chlorine kills bacteria. “Good” bacteria live in our digestive tracts. They help us digest our food.

Without them, we become constipated, bloated and have other digestive problems. That’s why so many people are pushing yogurt, for what they refer to as its “pro-biotic” affect, the opposite of “antibiotic” that kill bacteria. If it really is an antibacterial, I’m not sure that I consider drinking mineral water healthy, at all.

As far as the antifungal properties, I’m not sure which of the components they are referring to. Magnesium and sulfate are both said to be found in the natural mineral water H20. Magnesium sulfate is more commonly known as Epsom salts and has many uses.

I’m not sure if the content in the natural mineral water H20 is high enough to provide the relaxing benefits of a bath in Epsom salts. Selenium sulfide is an antifungal agent. But, while the elements selenium and sulfur are naturally occurring and can be present in our waters, selenium sulfide is not a naturally occurring compound.

People get confused about elements, electrolytes, minerals and the chemical compounds that comprise them. Research has shown that drinking distilled waters, which are free of minerals, on a long term basis cause digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies. So, that might be why people consider mineral water healthy for drinking.

But, here’s the big thing to consider. Natural mineral water H20 or any other type can be contaminated with synthetic chemicals that are hazardous to our health. Every pollutant in the environment ends up in groundwater and eventually flows through a tap and into the household.

That’s why I use a filtration system in my home. It uses an ion exchange device to convert some dangerous contaminants to potassium and sodium. I consider that good for my health, so I guess I do really consider mineral water healthy, after all. So long as it comes through my filtration system.
