By Donna When I was a child I read the Greek myths and classic fairytales voraciously –I just could not get enough of all that drama. I was somewhat of a precocious reader, and so I read them in the “adult” versions at an early age instead of the cleaned-up stories produced for schoolchildren. The simple modern-day stories in our reading textbooks bored me – Dick and Jane and Spot were no match

I agreed to be interviewed by Kayleen Schaefer for a New York Times article that, presumably, was about how beauty companies and agencies are recognizing the growing influence of blogs. However, when Ms. Schaefer began questioning me about trips to Paris, free Chanel bags, and spa getaways (none of which I have ever been offered or received), I contemplated ending the interview. I should have!

Tias_beauty_room I've had an incredibly busy day trying to get out of the office to get to NY, but I couldn't let this day go by without addressing the article that ran today in the NY Times about beauty bloggers.  I'm on the train as I type.  Well, first the attack on some of the best beauty bloggers and my beauty buddies in the makeup jungle is so not fair.  I wonder if the Times are feeling the crunch of a new form of news medium that they had to go on the defensive.  I guarantee there is not a beauty editor in the print medium paying for those products.  Celebrities get free stuff all the time and journalists don't seem to mind that.  I'm glad to see Kristen chatting with Daria Werbowy and to know that bloggers were flown to Paris to speak with the perfumer Jacques Polge and see Chanel's apartment.  I raise my lip gloss in admiration for these ladies because it's great to see smart, intelligent, beautiful women unite in our love for beauty.  If Victoria Secret wants to fly Tia around the world, go ahead girlfriend and toss up the champagne glass for all of us.  As Jill Scott would say - "Hate on me Hater."

We all know when beauty bloggers love a product and when we hate something - we hate it.  Did they not read my write up about the Bobbi Brown Brightener which I hated, the Lancome Fatale mascara which was just wrong for me, did they not see my rant about the rudeness at the makeup counter last year, or do they understand the power of how beauty junkies united over our love the Lancome Behnaz lipstick, which I bought four from all four Lancome boutiques in the US.  Maybe, they should have been in my home last night as I sifted through my receipts from 2007 from Bergdorf, Neimans, Bendel's, Barneys, Sephora (on 2 continents no doubt), CVS, Walgreens, Target, and the Dollar Store (beauty has no boundaries).

The best thing about the article was my fairy godmother, the uber-talented, funny, witty, smart, and fabulous writer Tia.  [I have the same exact MacBook].  Her makeup is perfect, her hair is flawless, and by golly "I want my own beauty room."

What the blogosphere has done is given me new friends and acquaintances that I never would have met otherwise.  I don't know all my readers, but I like them all the same.  I never would have met TB from Chicago, Tara from New York or my fellow beauty buddies in the Beauty Blog Network.  The reason I started blogging is to have an online beauty party with ladies just like me.  That's what blogging does.  It's the connection and no amount of free lip gloss will ever get in the way of that.

Love, life, and always may the lip gloss be with you.

Beauty Wannabe asks:
Q: Ok, Fabulista, I need specific advice! :)
I'm a relatively new reader, and have always liked to keep my makeup simple. I'm not in NY, but want to look with it, without always looking overdone. I love your reviews of various products. But I'm looking for the basics. What would your advice be to someone who needs to keep it simple: one or two liners, shadows, etc.

What are the must-haves? I have very fair skin, dark hair, and blue eyes.
foundation?
cheek product?
liners? a gel liner?
lip - what 2 products are must haves?

Is it even possible for you to limit your selection down? I am just realizing I've been wearing the same things... it's time to start over, and I can't just get a million things at once. I'm looking for products that are easy to use, long lasting (apply once per day), and attractive. I realized I've been using pencil liner forever, and I need something better!!

Please help me!

Thank you,
Beauty Wannabe

A: Hi Beauty Wannabe! Welcome! I love this question. I actually have a mini-drawer set where I keep my "extended makeup" collection. Then, on my desk that I use as a vanity table, I keep a large makeup bag of my "currently in rotation" items. They are ever evolving as I try and like new things, but I try to evaluate and move some things out to the "extended collection" on a monthly basis at least. If you're in the market for only a very select few items, I have a few fab recommendations. I'll try to limit it to no more than two suggestions for each category you've listed.

Foundation
Elizabeth Arden Intervene with SPF 15 delivers all day coverage that makes skin look smooth and even. I won't leave the house without at least SPF 15. I advise anyone over the age of 25 to embrace either a foundation or a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 in it for everyday wear. It moisturizes just enough without putting my combination skin over the edge and covers blemishes/flaws like a dream. $36

Cheek Product
I adore tarte Cheekstains. Available in a multitude of blush colors and a couple bronzes as well. I'm anti-powder, just an FYI. Powder ages you.

Liners
I LOVE CK Ultimate Edge Gel Liner in Black Ice ($16) of late. Other good ones include MAC Fluidline and Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner. But I find CK's to be the creamiest. A very thin line on the top lid is perfect for day and gel liners really LAST all day. No need to reapply. For regular liner, I'd recommend tarte Eyeliner Pencil ($18) in Madame X, a warm brown. Though still a regular pencil liner, it glides on easily, is perfectly smudgeable and is the richest brown color I've found in a pencil yet. And believe me, I'm CONSTANTLY searching for good brown eye pencils. I like to use this under eyes combined with gel eyeliner on the top lid for night looks or by itself only on the top during the day.

Lip Gloss
If you're only buying one, it should be Metier de Beaute Sheer Brilliance in Cannes. It delivers a gorgeous pink sheen and feels like Kiehl's balm on. Love, love, love. Also loving C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Tints, which are minty, moisturizing and come in several flavors and colors. Both glosses last a decent amount of time, but I think you'll have to resign yourself to the fact that you'll have to reapply gloss a few times a day. If you're really anti reapplication, I suggest going with a longwear lipcolor like CoverGirl Outlast $9.

I hope that answers your question! It was tres dificile to edit down my faves to these essentials, but I think you'll be pleased with the results of each. Do report back and let me know what you think!

xoxo,

Marvis Jasmine Mint Toothpaste - This is NOT your ordinary toothpaste... It's like a holiday for your mouth.... delicious and delectable! "A sweet and cool touch of mint with the surprising charm of the floral note of jasmin." Other flavors include ginger, aquatic mint, and classic mint. PRICE TAG: $8.95

Sweet Body Moisture Cleanser with Avocado
- A fresh and creamy body wash from famed Korea beauty destination, The Face Shop. It suds like soap but doesn't over dry skin. And the scent is very calming... dare I say, clean. "Ultra hydrating body line formulated with Avocado that supplies extra emollient texture and skin-benefiting nutrients with subtlely sweet scent." PRICE TAG: N/A

Chanel Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup with SPF 15 - Similar to the Beauty Banter favorite, Laura Mercier's oil free tinted moisturizer, this foundation offers both coverage and moisture. Skin is left with that dewy, I'm-not-wearing-makeup look. "Delivers a young, radiant look. Lines, wrinkles and imperfections seem to be erased. Ultra-gliding fluid provides buildable coverage." PRICE TAG: $52.00

Becca Jewel Dust - Eye powders in bold and intense colors that last for hours and offer a glitter effect. Make Up For Ever makes a similar product - star powder... both are equally fun and flirty. "Created from pure pigments that provide the highest lustre and intensity..." PRICE TAG: $22.00

Johnson & Johnson Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar - A nice diversion from my Cetaphil anti-bacterial cleansing bar. This one is massive, inexpensive and it actually cleans away all of the oil and grime without over drying. "Even those with sensitive skin can use it twice a day for a healthy looking, healthy feeling complexion." PRICE TAG: $3.99

Okay, so I didn't want to have to do this but... there was an article written in The New York Times about the beauty blogging industry and well, let's just say that it was skewed quite a bit.

Click HERE to read the full article.

Apparently, the writer of the piece felt it necessary to insult beauty bloggers, making it sound like we only blog for the free swag.

For the record, I blog because beauty is my passion. I love to discover new products and pass them along to my blogging friends who are just as impassioned as I. And as many ladies out there know, a tube of lipstick or a free body scrub doesn't pay my rent, my car payments, my insurance... nada. What it does do, however, is allow me to stay abreast with the beauty industry, test products that I otherwise may not have the financial means to test, and then review it, and post the honest review on my blog for all to see!

I will keep blogging because I love beauty and although I may not be a beauty editor at some snazzy fashion mag, I am a beauty editor of a snazzy and fabulous beauty blog!

Wow, friends. January is FULL of highs and lows for me. First, I was BEYOND delighted to be featured in WWD's top ten beauty blogs. That same day, I found out that a very good guy friend of mine from college / ex boyfriend hybrid was having a child out of wedlock with some girl he's been seeing all of five minutes. It was weird news to say the least.

Today, I was unpleasantly surprised to learn what a certain NYT contributer thinks of beauty bloggers... but then later, I found out that I was nominated for a Trendora.com Lifestyle Award! Trendora, BTW, is a fabulous online designer shopping site based in Luxembourg. I'd like to thank whomever nominated me (you're a doll!) and Romy and Michele for drawing my attention to the importance of using the word "lifestyle" incessantly and even replacing the word "life" with it regularly. "I mean, look at our LIFESTYLE. Look at the way we live."--Michele.

P.S. Tonight is the NIGHT I and fellow LOST fans have been waiting for since last May! I eagerly anticipate the premiere like you wouldn't BELIEVE. My best friend Lee has the added bonus of being able to watch the show for the first time in 2008 on her BIRTHDAY! Happy birthday, doll. You are the wind beneath my wings :) I'll be back tomorrow with a recap/analysis. Don't you miss those? :)

Beauty blogs are in the news again, but this article is particularly scathing.

I don't appreciate the writer of this article imperiously presuming we're all "beauty whores." And BTW, check out Christina's right-on retort.

Personally, I receive a lot of free products (the better to advise you with, my dear!) But anything I recommend on BBJ I actually use and like. And dolls, I still buy products. A lot of products. I started this blog because I adore BEAUTY and after spending anywhere from 10-15% of my money for the past 13 years on products, I appreciate every single freebie I get. Also, I spent over a year (15 months in fact) reviewing products I bought myself until I received my first free item. I started this blog without knowing that beauty bloggers even RECEIVED free stuff, nor the promise that I'd ever be the recipient of any "swag."

Pre-blog, I found myself advising friends, colleagues, family members, even male auditors in their fifties with whom I worked about what products they should use. I started the blog to share my knowledge with a broader audience and as a much-needed outlet to distract myself on occasion from the dry-as-dust financial writing I do at work. I have no ties to any one beauty company. I simply recommend what I like, try to sensitively write about what I don't like (on occasion), or simply not discuss things I don't like at all. I spend my days at work discussing the subprime mortgage crisis. Why in a world where we live as people would I want to discuss products that suck on my blog the majority of the time? I spend about 10-25 hours a week staying up late after work, on weekends, and lunch hours to write BBJ.

To quote Heather and Jessica of Go Fug Yourself, "that kind of haterade is simply not on the menu here at [BBJ]."

Just my two cents.

P.S. What's that scent you're wearing, Kayleen? It smells remarkably like... eau de sour grapes.
